How to Research Your KDP Competition Before You Publish
June 4, 2026 · 5 min read
Most KDP tools show you a rank number and stop. But a number doesn't tell you what to publish. The answer is sitting in your competitors' reviews — here's how to mine it before you make a single page.
Start with the books already winning
Find the top 3–5 books for your target phrase. These are your real competitors. You're going to reverse-engineer why they sell and where they fall short.
Read the reviews like a product manager
- 1–3 star reviews = your feature list. Every complaint is something you fix and advertise.
- 5 star reviews = what to keep. Don't break what buyers already love.
- Repeated phrases = keywords. The words buyers use are the words to put in your title and description.
Turn it into a title and description
If buyers keep writing "wish it had thicker paper" and "great gift," your description should say "thick, no-bleed paper" and "perfect gift." You're not guessing keywords — you're repeating the buyer's own language back to them.
The fast version
Reading dozens of reviews by hand works but takes hours. The Spy tool does it in about a minute: paste a competitor's Amazon link and it returns the top complaints, the content gaps, and the title/description keywords — a one-page brief for a book that beats theirs. Pair it with the Niches tool to confirm the niche is worth entering in the first place.
